Snow Blower Maintenance Checklist for Every Season
September 10, 2026
A simple before, during and after-winter maintenance routine that keeps your snow blower starting first time.
Before the first snowfall
Do these checks in autumn, before you need the machine.
- Change the oil on gas machines and fit a fresh spark plug.
- Inspect shear pins, scraper bar, skid shoes and belts; replace worn parts.
- Charge batteries fully on battery-powered models.
- Test-start the machine so problems show up before the storm.
During the season
Keep spare shear pins on hand — they are designed to break when the auger hits something hard. Clear snow and ice from the machine after each use and store it out of the weather.
End-of-season storage
Add fuel stabiliser or run the tank dry on gas machines, clean the housing and store batteries indoors at room temperature. A little care in spring prevents most start-up problems next winter.
